To undertake complex safety critical work, particularly in the nuclear and rail sectors, as well as winning work in the quality critical superyacht market, DML must demonstrate that it has a competent and highly skilled workforce. DML spends £5million a year on training.
- Apprenticeship:
Our apprentices undertake a QCA approved Marine Engineering NVQ and City & Guilds qualification in their chosen craft.
- Skills Progression:
Following apprenticeship training, our craftsmen/women are financially incentivised to develop their competencies through a process of 'Skills Progression'. This scheme requires line managers to assess an individual's competencies using competence record cards. These assessments are verified by our Industrial Skill's Managers who agree areas for development, measure achievement of progress and award recognition of "Advanced Craft Status" when appropriate.
In support of this scheme, approximately 20 people a year study for a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in their given trade.
For the strongest candidates this can lead to sponsorship to undertake a foundation degree course and for some a subsequent engineering degree.
- Graduate Training:
Our graduate training programme is accredited by the IEE, IMechE, RINA and IMarEST and is designed to meet the competency requirements of EC UK Spec.
- Continuous Professional Development:
Our graduates' and chartered engineers' development is managed through our mentored "Graduate and Professional Grades Scheme". This scheme incentivises continuous professional development through a series of progression payments.
As part of this process of continuous professional development , employees may receive funding to undertake a part-time post-graduate degree or even a PhD. At any one time, approximately 50 people are being funded to undertake such development.
As part of this development process, employees may also attend one of a variety of specialist technical courses, such as the Dockyard Nuclear Systems Course, a course designed to provide an understanding of a submarine's primary and secondary systems and their inter-dependencies.
- Leadership & Management
Leadership and management skills are as important as technical development. DML has a formal Management Development Programme. All personnel who have a managerial or leadership role will attend, at least one of the bespoke accredited Management Development Courses appropriate to their needs.
- Health & Safety
Health and safety management is an integral part our business and the company delivers a range of courses designed to meet the individual needs of personnel.
- Safety Engineering
The effective production and management of safety cases is critical to our business. People destined to work in this field can expect to develop their skills through a programme of specialist workshops, courses and formal academic study (PG Cert/PG Dip and MSc).
- Emergency Response
In any complex engineering environment it is imperative that people can respond effectively to incidents of any kind. The company has an emergency response organisation and everyone within that organisation receives formal training, supplemented by simulated exercises and refresher sessions.
