HMS VANGUARD REFIT COMPLETES AT DEVONPORT

HMS Vanguard left Devonport for Faslane today, following the completion of her major refit at Devonport Royal Dockyard. The refit began in early 2002 and utilised Devonport's new state of the art refuelling facilities for the first time. During this time the submarine and its systems have undergone a complete overhaul including a major package of work on the main gearbox.

Dr Dennis Gilbert, DML's Chief Executive, commented: "This is an immensely special occasion for the team involved directly in Vanguard's refit. Also for all of our other employees who provided support to them. The first refit on any submarine or warship is always a challenge. In this case doubly so, because it was combined with the first use of very sophisticated facilities that provide unprecedented levels of safety and assurance."

"The priority now as Vanguard sails is to finish the preparations for the arrival of HMS Victorious in the New Year."

HMS Vanguard will now undergo a series of trials whilst operating out of Faslane, prior to re-entering full service. DML will provide ongoing support to the submarine during this period.
