DML HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT REPORT 2006
These pages have been designed to provide information on the management of health, safety and the environment throughout DML's operations and to report on the company's safety performance. The current report information relates to 2006 and where applicable includes comparisons with previous years and highlights issues and initiatives that are ongoing in 2007.
Message from DML's Chief Executive
I am committed to making sure that DML achieves the highest standards in health, safety and environmental matters. Good health and safety management is not only a key requirement for a responsible employer but fundamental to business success. I fully endorse the company's formal Health &
Safety, Nuclear and Radiological Safety, Environmental and Quality Policies, all of which have been reviewed and where appropriate updated during the last year.
I set two targets on safety performance for 2006. The first was on overall lost time accidents where the objective was to record fewer than 90 during the year. This was achieved with close to a 20% reduction on 2005. I have set a target to reduce this by a further 10% in 2007.
The second target was for reportable accident frequency of 0.45 per 100,000 hours worked, 15% lower than we had ever achieved before. This level of performance was achieved throughout the last nine months of the year but due to a poor first quarter the annual figure was 0.60, virtually unchanged from 2005. This is still significantly below the average for our industry sector, but we can improve further. I have retained the target of 0.45 for 2007.
The nuclear work programme for 2007 is expected to be similar to that experienced in 2006.Therefore it is anticipated that collective and individual doses for 2007 will be similar to that of 2006. Doses will continue to be minimised for all our work asociated with ionising radiation in accordance with the ALARP (As Low AS Resonably Practical) principle.
DML operates an integrated business management system that is independently assessed by a UKAS accredited body and is registered to the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2000 standard. This management system covers all aspects of DML's business, including the management of health, safety and environmental issues.
Overall our safety performance during 2006 was good and we will continue our efforts to be industry leaders in ensuring the safety of our employees, the community and the environment.
